Clarence Ambrose Cherry dropped the Cherry name and became known as Clarence Ambrose (He was teased at school over his initals CAC). He married Lucy Green in 1909 and they had 5 children. Leslie J b.1910, Betty (Mary Elizabeth)b.1911, Gwendoline A b.1915 (dies age 4 in 1920), Denis G b.1920 (Died in WW2 age 21) & Frank Sb.1922.
Manny thanks for the Info from Kate Picker:
Mary Elizabeth was born 4th November 1911, and known as Betty. Clarence registered her birth in December to avoid paying the fines for being late! (Birth certficate says 4th December 1911). She married Leslie Yorke o 1st August 1936 and had Kathleen, Jean and Dennis (mike)
The family rumour is that Clarence changed his name because his initials were CAC and he didn't like that, although there is suspicion of some kind of falling out. On his marriage certificate to Lucy he named Walter as Walter Ambrose not Cherrey so I suspect he did not change it legally! He was never a soldier, family rumour is that he helped build planes during WWI. The address was Ulverley Green Rd in Olton. My great uncle Dennis died on a night time training flight in a Lancaster bomber in WWII, he is buried in Barston parish church in the same grave as his mother Lucy and they still read out his name on remembrance day."
Manny thanks for the Info from Kathy Perks
Rosalind, Christine & Miriam Ambrose are my first cousins & were born to my Uncle Frank. The other, youngest, brother Dennis was killed in WW2 aged 21. He is buried in a small village Barston in Warwicks along with his mother Lucy Ambrose. The grave is now looked after by the War Grave Commission as none of us live anywhere near.
Barston Churchyard
This was where Clarence moved to from Ulverley Green RD Olton & where my mother sister Jean & I lived for most of the war. They moved to Streetsbrook Rd when Gran had a heart attack . She died Nov 1955 from Leukemia. Clarence re-married twice more, the first one left him a considerable amount of money but the third wife managed to get most of it from him telling him she a spiritualist &somehow getting him to sign cheques, mind you he had lost his faculties by then. He would have been most upset as he had been a bit of a miser all his life.
I was born to Betty Ambrose & Lesley Yorke 28/09/37 my sister Jean 12/04/40 & my brother 05/06/47
Lucy died in 1955 age 73, Clarence married Ellen in 1958 but she dies fairly soon afterwards. Clarence became ill in 1963 but married again in 1966. He married a spiritualist medium called Dorothy Matthews who claimed she could cure his arthritis, however he died five years later of Parkinson's disease at the age of 89
Many thanks go to Chriss & Miriam (Franks daughters) for the pictures and memories
Chriss said "He was very proud of looking young for his age (at least, he thought he did) and he used to ask everyone he met how old they thought he was. He used some stuff on his hair called Morgan's Pomade, which must have contained a black dye, although he insisted that the colour was natural.
When he was young a gypsy told him he would live till he was 89, a fact he used to boast about until he gradually got closer and closer to that age. I have a feeling he did indeed die at that age, although I'm not sure. (In fact he did!!)
He suffered from arthritis late in life, which caused him great distress because he had always been very fit. He used to cycle a lot and play cricket when he was younger.
I don't think my dad was close to Grandad, mainly because he (Clarence) was away in Nigeria for many years, so his family didn't see a great deal of him. He worked as a carpenter. He was very proud of his work in Nigeria and had many mementoes. He had a very leathery brown complexion from all his time working in Africa."
Below is a table of Clarence' travels to and from England to Africa. These are probably not complete but give an idea of the number of trips to Nigeria he took.
