John Hibberd: 1745 - 1805 Born in Wilton, Wiltshire, England, John moved to Edmondsham, near Cranborne, Dorset. At that time, people were not allowed to move from one parish to the next without security, so it is presumed that John was financially secure. There is an indenture paper which is quite lengthy, and hard to understand, but Cathleen Cooper condensed it as follows: Lease of a cottage or tenement and garden and the closes of arable land for 99 years if the said John Hibberd, aged 42, and John Hibberd, aged 24, and James Hibberd aged 13 years, ( later husband of Rebecca), sons of the said John Hibberd party thereto or any or either of them shall so long live. Held from Mrs Philadelphia Bowers, (lady of the manor of Edmondsham) to John Hibberd. Fines 0 pounds; 10 shillings;0 pence. Reserved rent: 0 pounds; 5 shillings; 0 pence. "All that cottage or tenement and garden plot thereof adjoining and belonging, & 2 closes of arable land then run to also adjoining containing by estimation 3 acres (be the same more or less) situate lying and being in Wentworth aforesaid. Mrs Bowers retained the right to take any timber present or future on the land and right of access. The yearly rent of 5 shillings to be paid on feast day of Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and St Michael the Archangel by evening. Mrs Bowers has the right to repossess if necessary repairs are not done after 3 weeks notice. Tenant has to keep all fences, ditches etc., and cottage in good repair or be evicted "peaceably".
